Conservatism is a political and social view that holds to an ideal of traditional values and institutions in the context of culture and civilization. Quintin Hogg, the chairman of the British Conservative Party in 1959 said that "Conservatism is not so much a philosophy as an attitude, a constant force, performing a timeless function in the development of a free society, and corresponding to a deep and permanent requirement of human nature itself."
It can be very easy to see this broad topic and view it from our own predispositioned lenses. If left to this vague title there are many images raised of a rejection of heritage and a concerted effort to whitewash a black quest for racial justice. This could not be farther from the truth. We instead now have an opportunity to remove our lenses of stereotypes and see this topic more clearly.
REPUBLICAN PARTY / GOP
The Republican political party is one of the most prominent political parties in the American government system today. It is often referred to as the GOP which stands for the Grand Old Party. The Republican party’s current philosophies run in line with American conservatism.
Classical Liberalism is an ideology that focuses on civil liberties and freedoms given under representative democracy with advocacy for economic freedom. This form of governance was created with the idea that the individual and the individual's rights are paramount. Classical liberalism can encompass many ideas but is founded on these 10 core principles.
DEMOCRATS / LIBERALS
The Democratic Political Party is the oldest political party and one of the most prominent parties in the American political system today. The Democratic party’s current philosophies run in line with modern liberalism. They strongly endorse government spending on programs such as education, health care, and welfare as well as social issues which include addressing inequality, reproduction and other women’s rights, and support for same-sex marriage.
CHRISTIANS / THE CHURCH
In looking at the history of America it is easy to see where many of the founding fathers used their faith to implement political ideologies. So it is very interesting to see how Christians and the Church should respond to the government today. The Bible does not provide an all-encompassing view of how to respond but it does touch on some very key issues.
