The Second Amendment gives citizens of the United States the right to keep and bear arms. This amendment to the constitution was written for the purpose of allowing citizens to protect themselves, their families, and their property. But in an age where our news media junkets are bombarded with stories of mass shootings and crime rates more and more, politicians are moving to create stricter gun control laws and abolish the second amendment. However tragic these events may be we cannot allow politicians to use these travesties to espouse their own political agendas.
Here are the reasons why we need to protect our 2nd Amendment rights.
Gun control will not stop mass shootings.
These are immensely tragic and devastating events. But consistently we see politicians using these to pull on the heartstrings of Americans to push through their own agendas. In nearly all cases a more restrictive gun law would not have prevented these shooters from purchasing a gun legally. Most of these shootings are done by very disturbed individuals who have not committed a dangerous crime previously.
Gun control laws have not worked in other countries.
A Harvard University study has shown that in countries that have banned guns tend to have a murder rate dramatically higher than their neighbors who do allow guns.
Guns are an effective way to provide self-defense.
In the recent Orlando shooting, it took police three hours to respond to the 911 call. Simply calling for help will not always allow you to walk away from an altercation unscathed. Guns do allow you to protect yourself and those around you from a safe distance. A gun is a great equalizer. It can be huge leverage for women, elderly and handicapped.
Crime rates are down without gun control.
In 2014 we had the lowest homicide rate since 1963. So increased access to firearms has not led to having more violent crimes in the United States. Opinions on gun control aside, the numbers stand for themselves.
